LOLLAPALOOZA PLAYLIST & concert memories

So with Lollapalooza coming up this weekend (and since I won't be there this weekend..wahh) I thought it would be fun to have a LollaPalooza themed playlist and share a preview of the 2012 lineup!

Link to Spotify Lollapalooza Playlist

"Choose not a life of imitation." Such a great line from one my favorite RHCP songs! (I actually didn't feature it on this playlist specifically..they're so many RHCP songs to choose from) I'd definitely have to agree that those are some "lyrics to live by."

I love pretty much all of these bands and seeing this year's lineup actually reminds me of some of the concerts I've been to back home in California...brings back some great memories of great times spent with some of my best friends. It's amazing how music can bring people together..how you can literally feel the energy of the crowd...how a song that you love so much can completely lift you up and have you jumping up and down in the air (or even motivate you to push that much harder in your own daily workout!).

San Diego Street Scene 2006 w/ my sister Ria, our friend Kris & my BFFF Glen (saw Kanye West, Bloc Party, Snoop Dogg)
Girl Talk at the Grove in Anaheim 2009 w/ the "U R Club" w/ Glen, Ana & Cristelle ( we had to bring the most amount of recycled cans to get VIP passes)
COACHELLA 2009 hands down...the best concert I've been to in my life!!!

TruHarmony Yoga & Lululemon

Since TruHarmony Yoga was chosen as "studio of the month" I got to teach a complimentary class at the Lululemon 900 N Michigan Ave. store and it was so much fun!

The staff was so great and even had me to come in to do a fun photoshoot modeling some of their new products!
I decided to go with the "Optimal Tank" in Pow Pink with metallic silver. It's a fun bright neon color that I thought would be great for the summer; not only for teaching but to wear in my own practice!
I love the design in the back with the double straps and the built-in bra that provides plenty of support (also comes with removable cups to add more shape and coverage). The staff at Lululemon were nice enough to give me this top as  a thank you for teaching a complimentary class for their store! (YAY!!!)
I loved this top so much that I even wore it at TruHarmony Yoga's "Keep Calm and Party On" event and paired it with a BCBG skirt and stilettos. The moisture wicking Luxtreme fabric also kept me from sweating through my shirt when I was getting down on the dance floor. =P

  •  TruHarmony Yoga is "Studio of the Month" at Lululemon & I'll be teaching!!!

2nd Edition of "What's in my Yogi Bag"
I LOVE my new "Surf 'n' Turf" Tote in beachy floral dune print.

It's the perfect bag for the summer that fits all my yogi essentials but also is water resistant so it's just what I need when taking it to the beach. The tote also has an interior removable bag, which comes in handy if you want to separate your wet clothes, towels, etc.

What's Inside?
A summer essential! It's hydrating and light, so it doesn't leave a greasy feeling on your skin. It's also pretty water resistant so still stays after teaching yoga. =) I also still get a pretty decent tan after applying this sunscreen, but don't get burned. (also necessary if your'e doing some beach yoga!)

Pictured is the deodorant bar but I actually recommend using the body lotion. It's not featured on the website, but you can find it at the store in Wicker Park. (they have the cutest beauty supplies there too soaps and bars shaped like cupcakes & cakes) This lotion not only smells great but it's lightweight and absorbs excess sweat & elminates odor keeping you smelling fresh.

It's not as heavy as a regular foundation and also has SPF 25 that provides great coverage for my skin. There's an array of shades you can get from light to medium complexions (I use toasted beige).

My favorite pair of sunglasses ever. Polarized lens. Classic frame that comes in all kinds of prints & colors to suit your fancy. nuff' said.

Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training

Roscoe Village Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training Crew

I had the opportunity to assist in this round of Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training at Roscoe Village. It was a great experience being able to assist in facilitating this training...seeing the growth in each individual and be there with them as they took this step in their yogi journey.

If you had asked me 3 years ago before I moved here I don't think I would have ever imagined myself teaching yoga, but it definitely has changed my life. It is a great feeling being able to guide people through their practice. Being a yoga instructor gives me an opportunity to express myself creatively and has shown me that there are no limits in where life takes you.

"The only thing limiting us in life is our belief that there are limits."

If you are looking to take your practice to the next level & love Yoga Sculpt as much as I do please feel free to contact me!

Working your way into that "impossible" pose

So Spring has made it's way to Chicago...

For many yogis, there's that one particular pose that you might think is "impossible." For some it's head stand, others dancer's pose, the list goes on...for me, Crow pose at one point was one of those "impossible" poses for me.

One of the most amazing things happened because I was able to hold crow pose for the first time without any assistance (from a block, assist, etc.) so it was really exciting to just have that moment. I think back to this time last year when I was still going through teacher training for yoga & how I initially was terrified of the thought of teaching a vinyasa class. I figured how in the world am I going to be able to teach someone how to get into crow pose if I can't do it myself? Well the more I continued to practice the easier it has become..before today I would use the assistance of a block to help get me into the pose, but today I was feeling a bit adventurous so I thought to myself why not give it a whirl and see if I can pop into it!

Bakasana Crow Pose
One of the awesome things about crow pose is that it is a foundational pose for arm balances...(so at some point I'd like to work my way into headstands).

Benefits of the pose:
  • Cultivates upper body strength (lots of core strength)
  • Cultivates balance
  • The inversion reverses blood flow & calms your central nervous system
  • Stimulates confidence (yay!)
  • Reignites energy

Also an update on surfing in California...
After nosediving on my first run & crashing under the waves...I was able to stand up on my board and catch a wave...even if it was just for a second. ;) I'm looking forward to going back and trying it again! =)

Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training was just one of the steps of my yogi journey, but it definitely changed my life ever since. I would have never even dreamed three years upon moving to Chicago that this would be what I am doing now, but I couldn't be happier. Currently I'm reading "Living Your Yoga"and I really like how she explains "What is Yoga?"
    • "Yoga helps us to remove all obstructing mental clouds, so that we may come to enjoy the sunshine within. It's an extensive program of reeducation through which we learn, step by step, to live in the light of our true nature. Only when we have truly found ourselves will be able to live in peace, harmony, & happiness in the world."
One of my favorite quotes is that "Life isn't about finding yourself; life is about creating yourself." So although you might not have everything figured out, it's about taking each day and appreciating that moment...living in the present moment.

    Surfing for Beginners & Yoga

That's me, my sis & Gary in Kauai 2005.

I've always wanted to try surfing, being a "California" girl I thought how cool would it be to try surfing for the first time in Hawaii. I hyped myself up, was super excited and thought I was going to be like Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush. Instead the experience was more about me struggling to paddle on my board, choking on ocean water & practically crashing my board onto someone as I attempted to stand up. It basically turned out to be a bit of a disaster, I felt very frustrated and to be quite honest I didn't really have a desire to try that again, but since I am going back home to California this weekend I thought...maybe I can give it another shot.

That's my Tito (uncle) Albert, surfing back home in California...he's also going to help teach me learn how to surf! YAY. =)

To prepare myself for the second time around at surfing I figured I'd read up on some tips for beginner surfers and really liked this philosophy from the surfinghandbook.com.

"Before you begin, decide that you won’t get too frustrated. Surfing is supposed to be fun! It can be fun to just sit on your board and enjoy the beauty of the ocean without catching a single wave. If you’re not having fun, take a break. The last thing you want to do is get so upset that you vow never to return to the water again. Ask any surfer and they’ll tell you it is NOT an easy sport to learn. It can take a long time to develop the experience needed to do certain moves and read weather and wave patterns. Surfing generally favors those with a “try try again” attitude, so try to adopt this mentality. The only way to get better is to keep practicing!"

I thought that was really awesome & actually made me feel better and more excited about trying surfing for the second time. What really stood out to me was that I felt like the whole philosophy relates to the yogi journey because so many times I feel like I might get wrapped up in what a certain pose is supposed to look like or how it's not possible for me to do a headstand, etc. but when I think about the whole experience being fun and even looking back to my first time taking yoga..I don't think I really had any idea what I was doing. I remember looking around the room with a puzzled look, thinking how in God's name are they doing that?!..and how the hell did they get into that?? Or my fear of having to demonstrate crow pose in front of students..I realize now that it's fine to be exactly where I am at in my practice because each day I am still continuing to grow. Before I don't think I could even lift a toe off the mat when trying to do Crow pose, but now I am teaching it every week.

I'm really excited about giving surfing another shot, I anticipate that it's probably going to be difficult but I'm just looking forward to "enjoying the beauty of the ocean" and spending a day at the beach with my awesome family...and maybe we'll even do some post-yoga surfing. =)

      What's in my Yogi Bag

Since I'm always on the go teaching at different studios throughout the week there are some yogi essentials I always have in my bag.

First off, I love my Lululemon Triumphant Tote Bag which I got in "Persian Purple."
It is the perfect size for all my yogi essentials. It's not too bulky and has several compartments and pockets that help me keep my stuff organized, but also keep my CTA card & wallet somewhere that's easy for me to access, but still being able to keep those items secure. I also love the interior pocket that comes w/ removable bag for all my dirty yogi clothes & shoes.

      What's inside:
I LOVE this blend of oils, it's a blend of wild orange, lemon. grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, tangerine, clementine & vanilla. It is super energizing & many of my yogi friends have said that it smells like an "orange dreamsicle." It is the perfect energizing blend that wakes me up & I just place a couple of drops on my temples, behind my ears & the tops of my feet before I teach class. You can purchase this blend of essential oils via Ria's website http://www.mydoterra.com/rialovesyoga/ or contact me. =)

I purchased the "Wiccy Magic Muscles Massage Bar" because after teaching so many classes/practicing yoga throughout the week my muscles tend to get a bit sore. This massage bar is so awesome because it has whole Aduki/Azuki (Japanese Red Beans) Beans in the bar that when you glide it onto your skin it feels like fingertips that work to relieve the muscles & tension.
      Some benefits:
      • Aduki beans work your muscles and aches as the bar is massaged into the skin and they help to break out tension.
      • Cinnamon leaf oil is a brownish-yellow oil, which has a warm, rich and spicy aroma. Commonly used to fight feelings of depression, weakness and exhaustion, it has many other properties, including being an antiseptic, antibiotic and analgesic

I like using this powder after showering, it's great because sometimes after teaching/working out I still feel like I'm sweating but this dusting powder is awesome because it soaks up that extra moisture. The girls at LUSH were also nice enough to give me a little container so I wouldn't have to have to worry about the powder making a mess in my bag or have to carry the entire container in my bag. The smell of Jasmine and cocoa butter leaves a nice fresh scent on your skin too.

I love that LUSH products are all fresh, organic & handmade. LUSH also believes in protecting people, animals, and the planet. They pride themselves on creating sustainable products and reducing waste by selling products (like the massage bar) without plastic packaging and when necessary selling their products in recyclable containers.

EOS, The best lip balm, ever! Some people think that it's like a big egg when I bust it out of my bag. Sweet Mint & summer fruit are my fav flavors. It's 95% organic & 100% natural. It's pretty cheap too & you can find it at your local drugstore or beauty supply store.

The perfect mild facial cleanser after teaching/working out. I keep the travel size cleanser in my bag. I like this cleanser lathers on your skin, removes make-up & dirt but doesn't dry out your skin.
This is pretty much the item that I do not forget to pack before teaching/working out because I definitely have to stay hydrated! I recommend that everyone purchase a reusable water bottle because not only does it reduce your carbon footprint from purchasing a plastic water bottle, it also saves you some money because you can refill it throughout the day!!! (you don't have to buy a Hello Kitty one, but she's my fav so this one works for me hehe)

      xoxo
